Our Lady of Perpetual Help parish was established by the Bishop of Corpus Christi in 1954. At that time there was no South Padre Island expressway, and eighty percent of the land within the parish boundaries was covered with cotton. Yet within the first year, the small community that made up the parish, purchased and moved to its present location on Williams Drive; a number of World War II barracks buildings. These were to serve for many years as church, rectory, hall and school.
